Within the education system there has been a bit of a switch from lesson plans to learning plans. Learning plans are individualized for each student, whereas lesson plans are made for the class as a whole. I would like to note that lesson plans can be edited to include adaptations and extensions for the students that have different needs than the majority of the class. The major differences are shown in the infographic in this post.

This week we watched Most Likely to Succeed Film. Some parts I found interesting about this film was how the subjects were not in separate classes, but instead all classes were cross-subject. This reminds me of the more recent push to be thinking about how you can teach subjects cross-curriculum. Although there was no curriculum in the school in the film, it reminded me of that. As well, the teachers in the film taught the class how they wanted to teach it, and it was all based on the final project. This reminds me of the newer BC curriculum, because there is much more flexibility in how you teach it. As long as you teach the required content and competencies, the way you teach it doesn’t matter. I believe that the new BC curriculum is trying to move towards the idea of a reimagined education system. However, I believe that in order to reimagine the system, it relies less on the curriculum but more on society itself. Society has decided what they label as successful, so in order to completely reimagine education then society would also have to change how they label a successful student. When I was in school, if you weren’t planning on attending a university then you were instantly going to be less successful than your classmate who was. This mindset would have to change for the education system to be completely reimagined.

The idea that we are moving away from traditional schooling, where students spend all day with worksheets, sitting in their desks, makes me very excited! I am happy I am moving into a career with flexible teaching styles. Where I can teach using a universal learning plan, so each child’s needs are being met within my classroom. I am excited to be able to take my students outside so we can learn from the area we live in. I am excited to be moving into the education system at this time.
